Abandoned Chicago Dog Gets Much Needed Makeover

  • When Chicago’s Trio Animal Foundation (TAF) rescue team found this pooch wandering the streets of the city, they literally couldn’t tell her head from her tail. With matted dreadlocks, urine soaked fur and an abundance of fleas, poor Ellen was in a bad way.

“We had to get a treat to see which end lifted up to sniff,” Sue Naiden, founder of TAF. “We couldn’t even figure out if the dog was a male or female.”

After calling in a local groomer, Ellen spent an hour and a half being shaven back into shape. The result was a huge two pounds of excess fur and one happy pup!

“The amount of grooming tools that [the groomer] had to use to break through the hard shell of fur was unbelievable,” wrote Naiden on the TAF Facebook page. “The first time that she could feel the touch of my hand on her newly shaven back… She looked me in the eyes and it was as if she was saying thank you… Her past abuse was literally being shaved away.”

After patiently allowing herself to be shaved, Ellen was given a bath, a trim and then transferred to the vet where she was given a thorough examination and essential vaccinations. Due to the excessive fur, Ellen’s skin was raw and irritated, causing the poor dog a significant amount of pain. Thankfully, the TAF team were on hand to patch her up and today, Ellen is as happy as ever.

Ellen is just one of the adorable dogs that TAF has managed to save. Since her big haircut, she’s been treated to a new collar, a handful of toys and a soft place to sleep. The good natured pup is now on the search for a loving new home that will give her the care and attention that every dog deserves.
