Dolphin Death Rise to 300 in U.S. Cause Still a Mystery
Almost 300 of these beautiful marine mammals have sadly died along the East Coast of the US as of August 20, according to the federal government
An increasing number of dead dolphins have washed up across the East Coast this summer than in an average year. The high death toll, covering an area that stretches from New York to Virginia, has been labeled an “unusual mortality event,” and the experts from U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are scrambling to figure out what’s going on.
A team from The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response has performed necropsies on dead dolphins to determine the cause. Stranding rescue organizations say that they’re still unsure what has caused the rise in dolphin deaths. Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey noted some of the dolphins have respiratory infections.
