Service Dog Graduates High School Alongside 17 Year Old Student

  • June 2 saw 35 students from Christian High School in Hudsonville, Michigan proudly graduate wearing caps, gowns and ear to ear smiles. However it wasn’t just humans that were gracing the stage. Walton the loyal service dog also donned a graduation outfit to walk alongside 17 year old student, Desi as she received her senior year certificate.

The gorgeous six year old golden retriever has been by the teen’s side for the past four year and helps her to manage the daily challenges of living with cerebral palsy. As well as being incredibly cute, Walton accompanies Desi to classes, helps her pick things up and is even trained to hand he wallet to cashiers. What a pooch!

As such an integral part of Desi’s life, when graduation time rolled around it was immediately decided that Walton would share the stage with the graduating class of 2014. Of course, Walton’s look wouldn’t have been complete without a matching cap and gown!

“He is going to walk with her during graduation… We thought it would be appropriate for him to wear a cap and gown” said Desi’s mother in an interview with the Huffington Post.

While Desi and Walton have an inspirational story, they’re not the first pair to graduate side by side. Last year photos of a woman and her wheelchair dog went viral when they attended her graduation ceremony in matching caps and gowns. She was eternally grateful to her dog Hero and said that she couldn’t have completed college without him.

“Hero knows over forty commands to assist me… He loves to retrieve objects for my like envelopes, pens, my crutches, etc. He also turns off the lights, opens doors, and he pulls me in my wheelchair up ramps! I couldn’t have gone to college without him” gushed the young graduate.

We just love hearing stories like these and seeing the incredible difference that dogs can make to the lives of humans. Whether they’re simply loyal best friends or trained service companions such as Walton and Hero, dogs really are amazing animals!

Thanks to The Huffington Post for picking up the stories on these scholarly pups!

Share this if you think Walton, Hero and their fellow service dogs deserve a huge round of applause!
